Hinton, WV – Snow could begin coating mountain roads before sunrise Sunday, setting up slick bridges and dangerous travel across Summers and western Greenbrier counties ahead of the Monday commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, a Winter Storm Watch remains in effect from late tonight through Monday evening. Snow accumulations could range from as little as 1 inch in lower elevations to as much as 9 inches in higher terrain. Wind gusts up to 40 mph may create blowing snow and reduced visibility, especially along exposed ridges.
Communities including Hinton, Rainelle, Quinwood and Duo may see snow develop overnight, with heavier bursts possible Sunday into Monday. Interstate 64 through the New River Gorge region and Route 60 over higher elevations could become snow-covered quickly. Bridges and overpasses are likely to freeze first, increasing the risk of spinouts during both the Monday morning and evening commutes.
Drivers should delay non-essential travel and prepare for rapidly changing visibility. If travel is necessary, allow extra stopping distance, avoid sudden braking and ensure vehicles are winter-ready with emergency supplies.
The watch continues through Monday evening, and upgrades to warnings are possible as snowfall totals and wind impacts become clearer.
