Chesapeake, Va. – Drivers across southern Virginia, interior northeast North Carolina, and the Lower Maryland Eastern Shore may face sudden drops in visibility early Tuesday as patchy fog blankets the region. The National Weather Service says the fog, already detected on traffic cameras before sunrise, is reducing visibility to between one-half and three miles, with some areas seeing as little as a quarter-mile.

According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, the patchy fog is widespread from Chesapeake and Suffolk in Virginia south through Gates and Hertford counties in North Carolina, and north into parts of the Maryland Eastern Shore including Cambridge, Salisbury, and Princess Anne. The densest pockets are most likely near low-lying areas, river crossings, and rural roads.

Motorists are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and use low-beam headlights when traveling this morning. The fog is expected to gradually lift by mid-morning as temperatures rise, but drivers during the morning commute should remain alert for sudden visibility changes.

A second round of fog is possible in the same areas overnight if winds remain light.
