ALBANY, N.Y. – A widespread freeze will grip much of eastern New York, western Massachusetts, southern Vermont, and northwestern Connecticut overnight tonight, from 11PM until 9AM Friday, as clear skies and calm winds allow temperatures to plunge below freezing.

According to the National Weather Service in Albany, a Freeze Warning remains in effect for the Capital Region, the Berkshires, southern Vermont, and Litchfield County, Connecticut. Overnight lows are expected to dip to 30–32 degrees, with colder pockets in rural valleys and higher terrain.

Forecasters warn that frost and freeze conditions could kill crops, damage sensitive vegetation, and harm unprotected outdoor plumbing. Residents are urged to cover or bring in plants, shut off outdoor spigots, and wrap exposed pipes before bedtime. Pet owners should also ensure animals have adequate indoor shelter.

Calm winds and a dry air mass will allow efficient cooling across Albany, Pittsfield, Bennington, Glens Falls, and Poughkeepsie. Morning commuters should prepare for frosted windshields and slick rural roads, especially along I-87, I-88, and Route 7 before sunrise.

According to meteorologists, this marks the first widespread freeze of the fall season, effectively ending the growing season for much of the interior Northeast. Temperatures will rebound into the upper 50s by the weekend, with another brief cold push possible early next week.
