Albany, NY – Southern Vermont is under a Winter Weather Advisory tonight as freezing rain is expected to create slick travel conditions from early evening through early Sunday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Albany, the advisory covers Bennington County and Western Windham County from 7 p.m. Saturday to 1 a.m. Sunday, with a light glaze to one-tenth of an inch of ice possible. Communities such as Bennington, Stamford, Pownal, Woodford State Park, Stratton, and Londonderry are included in the advisory area.
Forecasters warn that even a thin layer of ice can create hazardous conditions on roads, bridges, and sidewalks, particularly after sunset as temperatures dip below freezing. Overpasses and untreated back roads are expected to become slick the fastest once precipitation begins.
According to the NWS, the freezing rain will likely impact evening travel across the southern Green Mountains region, including commuters, weekend visitors, and those heading to higher-elevation towns. Motorists are urged to slow down, leave extra stopping distance, and watch for icy patches where pavement may appear merely wet.
The freezing rain is expected to taper off after midnight, with temperatures gradually warming enough to improve driving conditions into early Sunday morning. However, any lingering untreated surfaces may remain hazardous until full melting occurs.
Residents across southern Vermont are encouraged to report any early icing or road concerns. If you’re in Bennington or Western Windham County, what are conditions like near you tonight?
