Burlington, VT – Vermonters can expect gusty conditions Sunday that could raise fire concerns across southern parts of the state, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Burlington.

The agency reported Saturday that winds will strengthen late Sunday morning through early afternoon, with gusts ranging from 20 to 30 mph in several areas. Higher gusts are forecast for southern and eastern Vermont, where drier conditions persist. Rain is expected to arrive by Sunday evening, offering some relief to elevated fire weather risks.

According to the NWS, a statewide debris burn ban remains in effect, and residents are urged to avoid any outdoor burning until conditions improve. Officials warn that even small fires could spread quickly under breezy and dry conditions.

Areas near Rutland, Springfield, and Brattleboro could see the strongest winds, while the Champlain Valley, including Burlington and Middlebury, should experience slightly lower gusts around 15–20 mph.

The NWS encourages Vermonters to secure outdoor items, avoid open flames, and monitor local alerts throughout the day Sunday as changing weather patterns could shift conditions rapidly.
