Salt Lake City, Utah – Dry air and gusty winds are combining to create dangerous fire conditions across southern Utah, with the highest threat expected Wednesday afternoon and evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Salt Lake City, southwest winds with gusts up to 30 mph and relative humidity between 8–12% will produce critical fire weather conditions through Wednesday. The warning covers areas from Cedar City to the Arizona border, with St. George and the I-15 corridor facing elevated risk.

The combination of dry fuels, strong winds, and low humidity means even small sparks can quickly spread. Campfires, fireworks, and other outdoor ignition sources should be avoided. Fire danger is considered “minor” in the Weather Risk Index, but conditions could rapidly worsen if winds increase beyond projections.

Residents in Iron, Washington, and Kane counties are urged to follow local burn restrictions and be ready to evacuate if needed. Fire crews are on heightened alert, and red flag warnings could be issued with little notice.

The NWS advises staying updated through Wednesday evening, as fire conditions may shift quickly with changing wind speeds.
