SPRINGDALE, Utah – Thunderstorms brought dangerous flooding to southern Utah late Wednesday morning, prompting a Flash Flood Warning for Kane and Washington counties, including Zion National Park. Law enforcement reported heavy rain causing flash flooding in Clear Creek and Gifford Creek, where fast-moving water has made some roads impassable.
According to the National Weather Service in Salt Lake City, the warning remains in effect until 1 p.m. MDT as heavy rainfall continues to move across the region. Officials say life-threatening flooding is possible in slot canyons, streams, and normally dry washes throughout the park and surrounding desert areas.
Park rangers are urging visitors to immediately evacuate canyons and avoid hiking in low-lying areas. Drivers are advised to avoid crossing flooded roadways and seek higher ground. “Turn around, don’t drown” remains the key safety message as most flood-related deaths occur in vehicles.
Flooding concerns may linger into the afternoon as additional rain bands move through southern Utah. The National Weather Service warns more alerts could follow if storms redevelop.
Areas affected: Zion National Park, Clear Creek, Gifford Creek, Kane County, Washington County.
Warnings remain in effect through early afternoon.
