St. George, UT – Residents and visitors in southern Utah are being urged to stay alert today as thunderstorms bring an increased risk of flash flooding through Monday evening. According to the National Weather Service in Salt Lake City, scattered showers and storms developing this afternoon could lead to dangerous flooding in slot canyons, normally dry washes, and areas near recent wildfire burn scars.
The weather service has issued a Minor (Level 1 of 4) flood risk for portions of southern Utah, where heavy rain may cause rapid rises in water levels. Flash flooding is particularly dangerous in narrow canyons and low-lying areas, where water can rise quickly with little warning.
Officials warn hikers and travelers to monitor weather conditions closely and avoid slot canyons or backcountry areas where runoff could occur. Motorists are reminded: “Turn around, don’t drown.” Driving through flooded roadways remains one of the leading causes of flood-related fatalities in the region.
The flash flood threat is expected to continue through tonight, with isolated heavy downpours possible. Travelers planning outdoor activities or holiday trips across southern Utah are encouraged to check the latest forecasts at weather.gov/saltlakecity.
