Cedar City, UT – A minor earthquake was recorded northwest of Cedar City on Tuesday night, October 14, according to the University of Utah Seismograph Stations.
The 2.5-magnitude tremor struck about 4 kilometers northwest of the city at 8:58 p.m. local time. Data from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) listed the quake’s depth at approximately 10.4 kilometers, a relatively shallow event that could be lightly felt near the surface.
According to the University of Utah Seismograph Stations, the quake’s origin was reviewed and confirmed within the regional seismic network. As of Tuesday morning, no reports of damage or injuries had been submitted through the “Did You Feel It?” citizen reporting system.
Minor quakes of this size are common in southwestern Utah, where seismic activity occurs along faults tied to the broader Basin and Range region. Most events under magnitude 3.0 are rarely felt beyond their immediate epicenter.
Residents who experienced shaking can submit a felt report to USGS to help researchers better map local seismic intensity.
