Buffalo, N.Y. – Overnight temperatures are expected to drop sharply across parts of western and northern New York, prompting frost advisories for early Tuesday morning. Sensitive plants and crops in Cattaraugus, Allegany, and Lewis counties could be at risk if not protected.
According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, temperatures will fall into the mid-30s in Cattaraugus and Allegany counties, and into the low 30s across Lewis County. The frost advisory runs from 2 a.m. to 8 a.m. Tuesday, with the most widespread frost expected in low-lying and rural areas.
Residents in Olean, Wellsville, and Lowville are urged to cover tender plants, bring potted flowers indoors, or use protective coverings overnight. The cold spell may also affect home gardens and small farms, particularly in valleys where frost forms more quickly.
Drivers should also be mindful of patchy frost on rural roads during the early commute hours. While widespread icing is not expected, localized slick spots could develop in colder valleys.
The advisories expire by 8 a.m. Tuesday as temperatures rebound into the 60s under sunshine, but another chilly night is possible later this week.
