Dallas, TX – A weak La Niña typically favors warmer, drier winters across the Southern Plains, and early signals point the same way for Winter 2026.

According to the National Weather Service Norman, the subtropical jet will shift northward, keeping moisture limited across Texas and Oklahoma. Daytime highs could average 3–5 degrees above normal, while cold fronts remain brief. Fire managers warn that cured grasses and gusty west winds may heighten wildfire risk by late January.

Drought expansion is possible across central Texas and western Oklahoma if rainfall deficits persist. Residents are urged to conserve water, secure loose outdoor items before strong fronts, and protect sensitive vegetation during occasional frost events.
