Tyler, Texas – A strong surge of Arctic air is expected to move into East Texas beginning Thursday, bringing a sharp increase in freezing temperatures and widespread frost concerns across the region while precipitation chances remain below normal through early next week.
According to the National Weather Service and NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center, East Texas is forecast to see limited rainfall from Thursday through Monday. While rain chances remain low, temperatures are expected to fall well below seasonal averages, creating a high risk for overnight freezes and prolonged cold mornings.
Communities across East Texas, including Tyler, Longview, Marshall, Lufkin, Nacogdoches, and Palestine, are expected to experience multiple nights with temperatures dropping to or below freezing. Sub-freezing conditions may persist for several hours overnight, increasing concerns for exposed pipes, outdoor plumbing, pets, and sensitive vegetation. Clear skies and lighter winds behind the Arctic front will allow temperatures to fall rapidly after sunset.
Rural and low-lying areas are especially vulnerable to colder readings, while urban centers may see slightly higher temperatures but still face widespread frost. Even areas closer to the Piney Woods and Sabine Valley could see freezing conditions that are colder and longer-lasting than typical for mid-January.
Daytime highs are expected to remain suppressed across the region, struggling to rebound even under sunny skies. Wind chills may make early mornings feel even colder, particularly in open and exposed areas.
Despite the dry pattern, isolated slick spots could develop on bridges and elevated roadways during the coldest mornings along major routes such as Interstate 20, U.S. Highway 69, U.S. Highway 59, and U.S. Highway 79.
Residents are urged to take cold-weather precautions, including protecting pipes, plants, and pets, and checking on vulnerable neighbors. This dry but unusually cold pattern is expected to persist into early next week, with freeze watches or warnings likely as confidence increases.
