Southern Plains & Gulf Coast – A dangerous heat wave is set to continue across the Southern Plains and Gulf Coast through August 20th, with forecasts predicting temperatures in the upper 90s to triple digits. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) warns that the heat will persist well into the upcoming weekend and possibly beyond.
According to NOAA, the combination of high temperatures and extreme humidity will push daily heat indices above 110°F in many areas. This prolonged heat exposure poses significant health risks, especially for those spending extended periods outdoors or in buildings without air conditioning.
There is a moderate risk of excessive heat lasting through late August, with a 40-60% chance for the Southern Plains and New Mexico. A broader slight risk of 20-40% for excessive heat will extend to other parts of the region. Residents are urged to take precautions, limit outdoor activities, and stay hydrated.
The heat wave may also contribute to elevated nighttime temperatures, with lows around 80°F along portions of the Gulf Coast, providing little relief from the oppressive daytime heat.
