Klamath Falls, Oregon – Dense freezing fog is settling over the Klamath Basin this morning, sharply reducing visibility along key north–south routes and creating slick patches on untreated roads.
According to the National Weather Service Medford, a Freezing Fog Advisory remains in effect until 11 a.m. today for northern Klamath and Lake counties, including corridors along Highway 97 north of Chiloquin and Highway 31 near Silver Lake. Visibility may fall below a quarter mile, especially in pockets near Crescent, Gilchrist, Chemult, Fort Rock, and the Christmas Valley region. Temperatures hovering near or below freezing are allowing thin ice to form on bridges and shaded curves.
According to ODOT, drivers should expect slow travel and sudden fog banks on Highway 97, where long straight stretches can hide frost glaze on pavement. According to local emergency managers, rural school transportation could experience minor delays where buses move through denser fog near Fort Rock and Silver Lake. Crews urge extra caution on county roads where sanding has not yet occurred.
Motorists should use low-beam headlights, reduce speed, and allow extended stopping distance. Avoid sudden lane changes, and be alert for livestock trucks and logging traffic common in the Chemult corridor. Pedestrians and cyclists should wear reflective gear along rural road shoulders.
Conditions will gradually improve late this morning as fog lifts, though isolated pockets may linger in sheltered valleys into midday.
