Medford, Oregon – Strong thunderstorms are set to sweep across southern Oregon this afternoon and evening, bringing damaging winds up to 60 mph, large hail, and intense lightning. Residents from Medford to Klamath Falls are urged to prepare for fast-changing weather as the threat of severe storms rises.

According to the National Weather Service in Medford, the greatest risk will stretch across Jackson, Josephine, and Klamath counties, where storms may spark frequent cloud-to-ground lightning and isolated hail events. Areas shaded in orange and yellow on Sunday’s threat maps are at highest risk, with warnings likely for the Rogue Valley and nearby highways.

Travelers along I-5, Highway 97, and rural mountain roads should plan for sudden visibility drops and slippery conditions if storms strike. Outdoor plans—especially in open or elevated areas—should be reconsidered, as lightning poses a serious hazard. Power outages and downed branches are possible in gusty wind corridors.

For safety, move indoors at the first sign of thunder, and have a backup plan if you’re camping or recreating in exposed terrain. Stay tuned to local alerts, as additional watches or warnings may be issued into the night.
