Medford, Oregon – Travel across southern Oregon and far northern California could become dangerous starting Tuesday as two winter storms line up to deliver periods of heavy snow, especially over mountain passes in Siskiyou County.

According to the National Weather Service in Medford, the first storm arrives Tuesday and continues into early Wednesday, bringing moderate to heavy snow over higher terrain in Siskiyou County and southern Oregon. Lower elevations are expected to see mostly rain during this initial system, while mountain passes turn snow-covered and slick.

A second, colder storm follows Wednesday evening through Friday morning, increasing the risk for heavier and more widespread snow. Snowfall during this phase is expected mainly above 4,500 feet, including Snowmans Summit and other higher passes in Siskiyou County. Forecasters note snow levels could drop Thursday night, allowing snow to reach lower elevations in the Mount Shasta region and expand travel impacts.

Road conditions may deteriorate rapidly over mountain routes, with reduced visibility during heavier snowfall and the potential for roads to become impassable at times, particularly in southern Siskiyou County. Drivers should expect chain controls, delays, and possible closures on higher-elevation highways.

Motorists are urged to avoid non-essential travel over mountain passes, carry winter emergency supplies, and monitor updates closely. Additional advisories or warnings are likely as the second storm strengthens and colder air settles in through late week.
