MEDFORD, Ore. – Fall rain is set to make a comeback across southern Oregon this holiday weekend, bringing damp conditions and cooler air through Columbus Day. The National Weather Service in Medford warns that a pair of weak Pacific systems will push showers into the Rogue Valley by late Sunday, creating slick roads for I-5 commuters and local travelers heading out for the holiday.
According to the National Weather Service, the first wave of light rain will move in Sunday night, with steadier showers expected on Columbus Day morning. Rain chances reach 70% during the early hours before tapering off by afternoon. Rainfall totals will remain light, but drivers should watch for slick pavement, especially near Grants Pass, Ashland, and north toward Roseburg.
Showers will fade Monday night, followed by partial clearing Tuesday as mild high pressure briefly builds. Daytime highs will hover near the upper 50s early in the week, then climb toward the upper 60s by midweek—perfect for pumpkin patch visits or fall park walks once roads dry.
No frost or freeze concerns are expected yet, but cooler evenings will continue through next week. Outdoor planners should secure decorations and allow extra time for morning commutes during the holiday.
According to ODOT, motorists should expect slower travel on wet sections of I-5 between Medford and Central Point and remain alert for patchy fog Tuesday morning.
