Medford, Oregon – Outdoor events across Southern Oregon and far Northern California could face major disruptions beginning Sunday as thunderstorms bring an increased risk of lightning and gusty winds through at least Tuesday night.

According to the National Weather Service in Medford, lightning activity is expected to ramp up Sunday, with conditions worsening into Monday and Tuesday. Areas of elevated risk include Klamath Falls, Lakeview, Mount Shasta, and Yreka, where storms may trigger wind gusts up to 55 mph. Monday and Tuesday bring the most widespread threat, with large areas of elevated risk and isolated zones of significant lightning activity.

Counties under heightened concern include Klamath, Lake, Modoc, and Siskiyou, where dry fuels could compound the fire danger. Lightning strikes paired with gusty outflows could down tree limbs, damage infrastructure, and spark wildfires. Those with outdoor plans—including hikers near Crater Lake or campers around Mount Shasta—should be prepared to alter travel and stay weather aware.

The strongest activity is expected in the afternoons and evenings, especially Monday and Tuesday. Emergency managers advise residents to avoid open spaces during storms, stay off ridgelines, and secure outdoor equipment.

Thunderstorm chances remain elevated through Tuesday night, with additional watches or advisories likely.
