Medford, Oregon – Thunderstorms packing frequent lightning, strong outflow winds, and small hail are expected to develop across southern Oregon and far northern California through Friday evening, posing a significant risk to outdoor activities and travel in the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Medford, areas including Yreka, Mt. Shasta, Alturas, and Lakeview fall under “Elevated” to “Significant” threat levels. Main hazards include cloud-to-ground lightning, gusts up to 60 mph, and brief downpours that may lead to debris flows in burn scar zones. Red-flagged areas, like Modoc County and Siskiyou County, face the highest potential for severe storm impacts.

Residents near Klamath Falls, Macdoel, and Happy Camp should remain alert, especially in elevated terrain, lakes, and open fields. “When thunder roars, go indoors” remains critical advice. Outdoor plans should be reconsidered, and shelter should be sought at the first sign of thunder. Avoid high elevations and wait at least 30 minutes after thunder ends before venturing back outside.

Storms may persist into the evening hours with more lightning risks continuing into the weekend. Further advisories may be issued based on storm development later today.
