Medford, Oregon – A widespread High Wind Warning is in effect across southern Oregon and portions of northern California from late Tuesday night through Wednesday, with damaging winds expected to impact travel, utilities, and holiday preparations, according to the National Weather Service in Medford.
The warning covers much of Jackson, Douglas, Klamath, Lake, and Curry counties in Oregon, along with Siskiyou and Modoc counties in California. Affected communities include Medford, Ashland, Grants Pass, Klamath Falls, Lakeview, Weed, Yreka, Alturas, and areas along Interstate 5, Highway 101, Highway 97, and Highway 395.
Forecasters expect south to southeast winds of 30 to 50 mph, with widespread gusts between 60 and 75 mph. The strongest winds are forecast in the southern Oregon Cascades, Siskiyou Mountains, Shasta Valley, and exposed ridgelines. Coastal areas from Coos Bay to Gold Beach may see sustained winds up to 50 mph, especially along headlands and capes.
According to the National Weather Service, these winds may move loose debris, uproot trees, and damage power lines, leading to scattered to widespread power outages. Travel could be difficult, particularly for high-profile vehicles, with hazardous conditions expected along mountain passes and exposed highways.
Some areas, including central Siskiyou County, Modoc County, and the Klamath Basin, are also under High Wind Watches for late Wednesday night through Thursday, signaling the potential for another round of strong winds extending into Christmas Day.
Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor objects, including holiday decorations, and prepare for possible power outages. Motorists should watch for falling debris and be alert for sudden strong gusts, especially overnight and during the Wednesday morning commute.
The National Weather Service advises closely monitoring forecast updates as this prolonged wind event continues across southern Oregon and northern California.
