Medford, OR – Beachgoers along the southern Oregon coast are being urged to stay off rocks and away from the surf as a high risk of sneaker waves develops from Monday morning through Tuesday evening. These powerful waves can surge far beyond the waterline without warning, pulling unsuspecting people into the ocean.
According to the National Weather Service in Medford, sneaker waves may strike beaches, rocks, and jetties with force strong enough to move logs and knock down visitors. The greatest risk will be along Curry County’s exposed coastline and beach areas, where cold ocean waters could become suddenly life-threatening.
Officials advise keeping off driftwood, jetties, and rocky outcrops. Sneaker waves can lift and roll logs with enough power to trap or crush anyone nearby. Even experienced swimmers are no match for the sudden pull of a sneaker wave. If someone is swept into the water, do not attempt a rescue — instead, call 911 and monitor their location until help arrives.
This advisory remains in effect through Tuesday. Additional alerts may be issued if wave conditions worsen or extend further north.
