Utica, N.Y. – Freezing rain and wet snow will create slick roads and possible power disruptions across parts of central and eastern New York through 1 a.m. EST Saturday, with the greatest impacts expected during the Friday evening commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for Southern Oneida, Otsego, Delaware and Sullivan counties. Additional snow accumulations up to 1 inch are expected, along with ice accumulations up to 0.20 inches. The highest peaks of the Catskills could see up to 0.25 inches of ice.
Even a tenth of an inch can down small branches.
Interstate 88 between Oneonta and Binghamton and Route 17 near Monticello may become slick as temperatures hover near freezing. In Utica and Rome, untreated secondary roads could turn icy before sunset. Areas east of the Catskills will see freezing rain transition to plain rain more quickly, limiting ice totals.
Road conditions may deteriorate rapidly after dark.
What residents should do now: Delay nonessential travel, reduce speeds, and check 511NY for updated road conditions before the evening commute.
Precipitation is expected to taper overnight, with temperatures gradually rising above freezing by daybreak Saturday. The Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 1 a.m. EST Saturday.
