Columbus, Ohio – Parts of Ohio could see destructive winds and isolated tornadoes Friday evening as a Level 3 severe weather threat targets areas south of I-70, including Chillicothe, Portsmouth, and Athens.
According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, the most intense storms are expected between 5 p.m. and 1 a.m. Saturday. Tonight’s storms will begin earlier—between 9 p.m. and 3 a.m.—mainly affecting cities north of I-70 such as Dayton and Springfield with damaging hail and strong winds.
Southern counties, including Ross, Pike, and Scioto, fall under a higher risk category for Friday evening. Level 3 risk zones indicate the potential for widespread damaging wind gusts, large hail, and a few tornadoes. Flash flooding is also possible in low-lying areas.
Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor items, charge devices, and avoid unnecessary travel during peak storm hours. Emergency managers stress the importance of having multiple ways to receive alerts, especially with overnight threats.
More updates are expected as the system evolves. Watches or warnings may be issued with little notice, especially in Level 3 zones.
