Boston, MA – The New Year arrived with light to moderate snowfall across southern New England, leading to slick roads and slow travel conditions overnight and into Thursday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Boston, snowfall totals generally ranged from 1 to 5 inches across much of Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island, with locally higher amounts in elevated terrain.

Western and central Massachusetts saw some of the highest totals, including parts of the Berkshires and Worcester County, where snowfall reached 4 to just over 5 inches. Communities such as Pittsfield, North Adams, and areas near Worcester reported some of the more significant accumulations.

In eastern Massachusetts, including the Boston metro area, snowfall totals were lighter, typically 1 to 3 inches, though enough to cause slippery road conditions during the early morning commute. Coastal communities from Quincy to Cape Cod generally saw lower totals, closer to 1 to 2 inches, according to the snowfall analysis.

Across Connecticut, totals ranged from 2 to 4 inches in many inland towns, including the Hartford and Norwich areas, while shoreline communities such as New Haven and Bridgeport reported closer to 1 to 2 inches. Rhode Island snowfall mostly fell in the 2 to 3 inch range, with slightly higher totals in northern sections of the state.

The National Weather Service noted the snowfall was compiled from regional observations and public reports, thanking residents who safely submitted measurements.

While the snow has ended, drivers are urged to remain cautious, especially on untreated roads and shaded areas where icy patches may linger.
