Boston, Massachusetts – Scorching heat and high humidity are creating dangerous outdoor conditions across southern New England, with parts of Massachusetts seeing heat index values climb to 105°F today. The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory for much of the state through this evening.
According to the US National Weather Service in Boston, air temperatures are expected to reach the upper 80s to mid-90s, but humidity will make it feel significantly hotter. “Feels like” temperatures are topping 100°F in cities including Boston, Worcester, Taunton, and Springfield, with areas along the South Coast and interior valleys also experiencing oppressive conditions.
The heat index is highest in western and southeastern Massachusetts, including Pittsfield, New Bedford, Fall River, and parts of Cape Cod. Outdoor workers and vulnerable groups are urged to take precautions: stay hydrated, limit strenuous activity, and take breaks in shaded or air-conditioned spaces.
Heat indices in the 95–105°F range can increase the risk of heat-related illnesses with prolonged exposure. Similar heat events have historically triggered spikes in emergency room visits, especially among the elderly and those without adequate cooling.
The Heat Advisory remains in effect until at least 8 p.m. Wednesday, with potential for extension if heat persists.
