Boston, MA – Much of southern New England will bake under intense heat starting Tuesday, with dangerous heat index values climbing to near 100 degrees and lingering through at least Thursday evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Boston/Norton, a Heat Advisory is in effect from 11 a.m. Tuesday until 7 p.m. Thursday for nearly all of Connecticut, Rhode Island, and eastern and central Massachusetts—including Hartford, Worcester, Providence, and Boston. The hottest stretch is expected Wednesday and Thursday, when oppressive humidity will push “feels-like” temperatures well into the upper 90s.

Cities like Framingham, Lowell, Taunton, and New Bedford could see peak heat index readings between 96°F and 100°F, especially during the afternoon hours. Health officials are urging residents to stay indoors during peak heat, hydrate frequently, and check on elderly neighbors or those without AC.

Cooling centers are likely to open across major cities. Travel on public transit may be impacted as extreme heat can strain equipment. Those working or exercising outdoors should take frequent breaks in shade and wear light clothing.

The advisory may be extended into Friday if the heat persists. More updates are expected by Thursday morning.
