Boston, Massachusetts – Boaters off the Massachusetts coast are being urged to remain in port Friday as gale-force winds and dangerously high seas continue to pound the region’s marine zones.
According to the National Weather Service in Boston/Norton, a Gale Warning remains in effect until 8 p.m. Friday for waters stretching from Cape Cod Bay and Nantucket Sound to offshore areas south of Martha’s Vineyard and Block Island. Winds are sustained at 25 to 35 knots, with gusts hitting up to 40 knots, while seas could peak between 12 and 17 feet, especially south of the islands.
Mariners in Vineyard Sound, Buzzards Bay, and Rhode Island Sound face slightly less intense—but still dangerous—conditions through 2 p.m. Friday, with winds gusting to 35 knots and seas nearing 14 feet. The combination of wind, wave height, and reduced visibility significantly increases the risk of capsizing or vessel damage.
The Coast Guard urges small craft operators to remain docked, and for all boaters to secure vessels and delay any non-essential trips. Ferries and commercial shipping may also experience delays or rerouting due to sea state conditions.
More marine advisories may follow as conditions evolve.
