Billings, Montana – Travel conditions are expected to deteriorate across south-central Montana late Saturday as snow spreads into foothill and canyon areas, creating slick roads and reduced visibility through Sunday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Billings, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from Saturday evening through Sunday morning for the Red Lodge Foothills, Beartooth Foothills, Northern Carbon County, Southern Big Horn, and the Bighorn Canyon area. Snow accumulations of 2 to 4 inches are expected, with the most persistent snowfall occurring overnight.
Communities including Red Lodge, Joliet, Fromberg, Lodge Grass, Pryor, Fishtail, Nye, Roscoe, and Fort Smith are likely to see snow-covered roads develop quickly after sunset. Travel along U.S. Highway 212 near Red Lodge and secondary mountain and foothill roads could become hazardous, especially during periods of heavier snow and reduced visibility. Conditions may be particularly tricky through the Beartooth Foothills and Bighorn Canyon where terrain can amplify impacts.
Drivers are urged to slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and plan additional travel time if heading out Saturday night or early Sunday. Snow-packed roads and low visibility may make travel difficult in spots through the early morning hours.
Snow is expected to taper off by mid-morning Sunday, though slick conditions may linger on untreated roads. Officials note that additional advisories could be issued if snowfall totals trend higher or visibility worsens overnight.
