Mankato, MN – The National Weather Service in Twin Cities/Chanhassen has issued a Winter Storm Warning for much of southern Minnesota, in effect from Friday evening through late Saturday night, as a widespread area of heavy snow moves across the region.

Forecasters expect 5 to 10 inches of accumulation across counties including Blue Earth, Nicollet, Goodhue, Rice, and Freeborn, with localized higher totals possible near Albert Lea and Fairmont. The heaviest snowfall is expected Friday night into Saturday morning, leading to hazardous road conditions and low visibility during periods of intense snowfall.

The storm will affect major travel routes including Highways 14, 60, and I-35, creating slick bridges, overpasses, and snow-packed roads across much of south-central Minnesota. “Travel could be very difficult,” the National Weather Service warned, urging residents to delay nonessential trips.

Drivers are encouraged to check 511mn.org for live road updates and carry emergency supplies such as blankets, flashlights, and food in case of delays.

Snow is expected to taper off late Saturday night, though cold temperatures will keep roads icy into early Sunday.
