Albert Lea, MN – A long-duration winter storm continues to spread across southern Minnesota and western Wisconsin today, bringing heavy snow, hazardous driving conditions, and low visibility, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) Twin Cities/Chanhassen.
A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until midnight tonight for Martin, Faribault, and Freeborn Counties, including the cities of Blue Earth, Fairmont, and Albert Lea. Total snowfall in this zone is expected to reach 7 to 10 inches, with the heaviest snowfall focused along the Interstate 90 corridor, where localized totals near 10 inches are possible by late evening.
Snow will continue to spread eastward throughout the morning and persist through the day, occasionally reaching moderate intensity. The NWS notes that snowfall will begin to diminish from west to east this evening into early Sunday, but travel impacts will remain significant.
Roads—including bridges and overpasses—will likely become slick and snow-covered, with areas of blowing snow reducing visibility at times. Travelers should plan for very difficult conditions, especially during periods of heavier snow this afternoon and evening.
Lighter accumulations are expected north of the warned area, including the Twin Cities metro, west-central Minnesota, and communities toward Bloomer, WI. However, prolonged light to moderate snow may still create travel concerns.
Officials urge residents to delay travel if possible. Those who must travel should pack emergency supplies—food, water, blankets, and a flashlight—and use extreme caution. Minnesota road condition updates are available at 511mn.org or by calling 511.
