Duluth, Minnesota – Strong to severe thunderstorms are expected to roll into Minnesota Monday evening, with the greatest risks targeting the southern half of the state. Residents from Mankato to Rochester should prepare for the possibility of damaging winds and large hail during peak evening hours.
According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, a Slight Risk (15% chance) for severe storms is in place for southern Minnesota, including the Twin Cities metro, while most of northern Minnesota—including Duluth and International Falls—faces a Marginal Risk (~5%). The most active window for storms stretches from 4 p.m. through midnight Monday.
Cities like Minneapolis, Lakeville, and Winona may experience wind gusts over 50 mph, along with periods of heavy rain. Storm chances remain elevated across the Iron Range as well, though with lower intensity. Travelers on I-35 and U.S. Route 52 should monitor conditions closely, especially during the Monday evening commute.
Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor items, stay weather-aware via NOAA alerts, and avoid unnecessary travel if warnings are issued. If conditions worsen, local emergency managers may issue localized advisories or warnings.
Storm threats may persist into early Tuesday morning. Additional updates are expected late Sunday from the NWS.
