Fairmont, Minnesota – Dangerous cold will grip southern Minnesota overnight as wind chills plunge well below zero, creating conditions that could cause frostbite on exposed skin in less than half an hour.
According to the National Weather Service in the Twin Cities, a Cold Weather Advisory is in effect from 1 a.m. until 10 a.m. Monday for Martin County, including the city of Fairmont.
Forecasters say wind chills could drop to between 25 and 27 degrees below zero, making it dangerous for anyone spending extended time outdoors early Monday morning.
The bitter cold may also impact early commuters and residents heading out before sunrise, especially in exposed areas where strong winds continue to pull temperatures down.
Officials warn that frostbite can develop in as little as 30 minutes when wind chills fall to these levels. Residents are urged to wear multiple layers, hats, gloves, and face protection if they must be outside.
Drivers should also be prepared for the cold by keeping emergency supplies in vehicles and checking road conditions before traveling.
Temperatures and wind chills are expected to slowly improve after mid-morning Monday, but residents across southern Minnesota should remain cautious during the early morning hours.
