Pontiac, MI – Severe thunderstorms, including the risk of isolated tornadoes, are expected to impact southern Michigan along the I-75 corridor from Pontiac to Saginaw this afternoon and evening.
According to the US National Weather Service in Detroit, the storms will likely bring damaging winds, large hail, and heavy rain between 3 p.m. and 10 p.m. The Slight Risk area was expanded with the latest update, indicating an increased chance of severe weather in the region.
Residents are urged to have severe weather safety plans in place and multiple ways to receive warnings. The storms could pose a significant threat to life and property, with wind gusts potentially reaching 60 mph or greater. Hail up to one inch in diameter and an isolated tornado are also possible secondary threats.
Following the severe weather, a cooldown is expected on Friday and Saturday with sunny skies and highs in the low 80s. However, the reprieve will be short-lived as temperatures are forecasted to climb into the 90s next week. High humidity levels will exacerbate the heat, with heat indices reaching the mid to upper 90s. Southeast Michigan is in a major risk category for heat-related impacts early next week.
Stay tuned for forecast updates and take necessary precautions to stay safe during the severe weather and upcoming heatwave.
