Portland, Maine – Holiday travel across much of southern and central Maine could become difficult as a winter storm threatens to bring heavy snow and low visibility beginning Tuesday afternoon and lasting into Wednesday.

According to the National Weather Service in Gray, a Winter Storm Watch is in effect for a large portion of south central and southwest Maine, including coastal and interior communities from Portland and Brunswick to Lewiston, Augusta, Rockland, and Belfast. Snowfall totals could exceed six inches, with the heaviest snow expected Tuesday evening into early Wednesday.

The storm is expected to affect both coastal and inland areas, including Cumberland, Androscoggin, Kennebec, Waldo, Knox, Lincoln, and Sagadahoc counties. Roads such as Interstate 95, Route 1, and Route 202 could become snow-covered and slick during periods of heavier snowfall, especially during the Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning commutes.

Low visibility during bursts of moderate to heavy snow may create hazardous driving conditions, particularly for holiday travelers heading to family gatherings or last-minute shopping. Officials urge drivers to allow extra time, avoid unnecessary travel during peak snowfall, and ensure vehicles are winter-ready with full fuel tanks and emergency supplies.

The storm is expected to taper Wednesday afternoon, though additional advisories or warnings may be issued as confidence increases. Residents are urged to monitor updates as the event approaches.
