Bloomington, Indiana – Heavy rain stalled over Bloomington early Tuesday is creating dangerous driving conditions, with flash flooding now a serious concern across Monroe County and surrounding areas.
According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, slow-moving storms are producing rainfall rates up to 1 inch per hour. Between 1 and 2 additional inches of rain are expected through late morning, increasing the risk of localized flooding in low-lying areas. A flood advisory remains in effect for central and southern Monroe County, including Ellettsville, Whitehall, and parts of Spencer.
Standing water is already reported on several roads in and around Bloomington, and officials are urging drivers to avoid travel unless absolutely necessary. “Turn around, don’t drown” remains the official guidance. Emergency management teams are on alert for road closures and high water rescues.
Rain is expected to ease slightly by early afternoon, but forecasters warn the saturated ground could lead to rapid runoff even after storms taper. Additional rainfall later this week could renew flood concerns across central Indiana.
Warnings remain in effect through Tuesday morning. Residents should monitor for updates and avoid driving through any standing water.
