Corydon, IN – Heavy rainfall is causing flooding across parts of southern Indiana this afternoon, prompting the National Weather Service in Louisville to issue a Flood Warning for Floyd and Harrison counties until 5:30 p.m. EDT Tuesday.
According to the NWS, 2 to 4 inches of rain have already fallen, with another 0.5 to 1.5 inches possible before storms move out of the area. Flooding is affecting rivers, creeks, and low-lying roads, particularly near Corydon, Elizabeth, and New Middletown.
Other impacted areas include Mauckport, Laconia, New Amsterdam, Central, and Breckenridge, where flooding of small streams and poor-drainage spots has been reported.
Residents are urged to avoid flooded roads and follow the NWS warning: “Turn around, don’t drown.” Officials emphasize that most flood-related deaths occur in vehicles attempting to cross water-covered roads.
Law enforcement agencies are also asking residents to report flooding when it is safe to do so to help track conditions in real time.
Rain is expected to taper off later this afternoon, though standing water and slick conditions may persist into the evening commute.
