LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Dangerous heat grips Kentucky today with highs pushing near 100 degrees and heat index values reaching up to 106, especially along and west of the I-65 corridor. A Heat Advisory remains in effect until 8 p.m. Tuesday, raising concerns for anyone spending extended time outdoors.
According to the National Weather Service in Louisville, hot and humid conditions will give way to scattered thunderstorms late this afternoon and evening. The storms may bring locally heavy rainfall, gusty winds, and dangerous lightning as a cold front slides across southern Indiana and central Kentucky.
Travelers across Jefferson, Bullitt, Hardin, and Oldham counties could face reduced visibility and slick roads by tonight. Emergency officials urge residents to limit outdoor activity, drink plenty of water, and never leave children or pets in parked cars. Spotters may be needed to track reports of damaging winds or flash flooding in storm-prone areas.
Conditions improve by midweek with cooler, less humid air settling in across the region. Highs fall back into the mid-80s Wednesday and dip near 80 by the weekend, offering some long-awaited relief from the heat.
Warnings remain in effect through Tuesday evening, with updates expected as storms develop.
