Scott County, IN – A Southern Indiana woman faces multiple felony charges after a tragic two-vehicle crash in May allegedly claimed the life of her six-year-old daughter and left several others injured in Scott County.
According to the Indiana State Police Sellersburg District, troopers arrested 25-year-old Dorothy J. Snell of Hanover on Tuesday after an investigation into the May 13, 2025, crash at the intersection of State Road 256 and U.S. 31. Police say Snell’s Chrysler 300 allegedly ran a red light, colliding with a Toyota Camry carrying four people at approximately 8:42 p.m.
Investigators said Snell, her front-seat passenger, and two others in the Toyota were transported to area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries. A two-year-old child in Snell’s vehicle reportedly sustained less serious injuries. Tragically, Snell’s six-year-old daughter was transported to Norton Scott Hospital and later died from her injuries.
Certified crash reconstructionists allege Snell’s vehicle exceeded the posted speed limit and ran a red light. The Indiana State Police report also indicates the six-year-old victim was not in a booster seat as required by state law but was only secured by a seatbelt. Police further allege Snell’s blood alcohol concentration exceeded Indiana’s legal limit of 0.08%.
Snell now faces multiple charges, including neglect of a dependent resulting in death, causing death when operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated, and operating a vehicle while intoxicated with a child passenger, among others. She was located and arrested on July 30 and transported to the Scott County Jail.
The case remains under investigation by the Indiana State Police, with assistance from the Austin Police Department and Scott County authorities.
