Evansville, Indiana –Residents across southern Indiana should stay alert and be ready seek shelter as a tornadic storm system that produced a confirmed tornado in southern Illinois Friday evening is now moving into the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, the same supercell that triggered a Tornado Emergency near Marion, Illinois around 6:20 p.m. is tracking east toward the Indiana state line. Communities including Evansville, Newburgh, and Boonville are at high risk for damaging winds, hail, and potential tornado development as the system crosses the Wabash River.

Emergency officials urge those in southwestern Indiana to take cover now, especially in Vanderburgh, Warrick, and Posey counties. The storm has a history of producing debris-signature tornadoes and could bring widespread power outages or road hazards.

Anyone in mobile homes or traveling along U.S. Route 41 and Interstate 69 should move to a sturdy shelter immediately. Stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio or local news sources for updates, and avoid travel until the storm clears.

Tornado Watches and Warnings remain possible through 9 p.m. More alerts may follow as the storm pushes deeper into Indiana.
