Mount Vernon, IL – A quick-moving Fall system will bring a coating of snow to Jefferson, Wayne, Edwards, and Wabash counties Saturday, creating slick roads for morning errands and evening travel across southern Illinois.
According to the National Weather Service Paducah office, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 6 a.m. Saturday through midnight. Most locations from Mount Vernon to Fairfield and Albion are expected to pick up around 1 to 2 inches of accumulation. Forecasters note that the timing of the snow—starting during the early morning hours—will allow it to stick quickly to cold pavement and untreated surfaces.
According to IDOT, light snow will begin accumulating on I-57, IL-15, and IL-37 by midmorning, with bridges and elevated ramps glazing first. Crews plan regular treatment cycles, but persistent light snowfall may keep roads partially snow-covered through the afternoon. Motorists should slow down, increase following distance, and check www.weather.gov/pah/roads for updates before heading out. Side streets and rural connectors east toward Mount Carmel may become slickest due to lower traffic volumes.
According to emergency managers in Jefferson and Wayne counties, light snow paired with temperatures near the freezing mark could affect weekend shopping traffic and church planning if conditions linger into the evening. Residents are encouraged to charge phones, keep blankets and ice scrapers in vehicles, and use caution on outdoor steps and porches, which may become icy by late day.
Snow diminishes late Saturday evening, but residual slick patches may remain through midnight before conditions gradually improve.
