According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, Severe Thunderstorm Watch 11 remains in effect until 9 p.m. CST Wednesday for counties including Jackson, Williamson, Franklin, Saline, Union, Jefferson and Massac. The watch also includes Alexander, Pulaski, Pope, Hardin, Gallatin, White, Hamilton, Wayne, Edwards, Wabash and Perry counties.
Storms may produce wind gusts up to 60 mph and hail large enough to damage vehicles. Travel along Interstate 57 near Marion and Interstate 24 near Metropolis could become hazardous during heavy downpours, with visibility briefly dropping below one mile. Lightning frequency may increase as storms intensify during the late afternoon and early evening hours.
Residents in Carbondale, Marion, Mount Vernon and surrounding communities should secure outdoor items and prepare for isolated power outages. Drivers should slow down on wet roads and avoid flooded low spots.
The watch means conditions are favorable for severe storms. Additional warnings could be issued quickly if stronger cells develop through the evening.
