Marion, IL – Thunderstorms have dumped more than 8 inches of rain across parts of southern Illinois Saturday, prompting flash flood warnings through 9 p.m. for four counties.
According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, flash flooding is either ongoing or expected to begin shortly across Williamson, Franklin, Johnson, and Pulaski counties. Law enforcement reported widespread heavy rainfall by 4:27 p.m., with additional rain up to half an inch still possible in the area.
Communities facing the greatest impact include Marion, Herrin, Benton, West Frankfort, and Vienna. Floodwaters are affecting low-lying roads, underpasses, and small creeks. Urban areas and poor drainage zones are also especially vulnerable, with officials urging drivers to avoid travel unless absolutely necessary.
The flooding follows a rapid downpour from slow-moving thunderstorms, which overwhelmed drainage systems and flooded multiple roadways. Emergency responders are closely monitoring conditions and assisting with traffic control where roads are impassable.
Residents are advised to avoid walking or driving through floodwaters. Most flood-related deaths occur in vehicles. Nightfall may obscure flood dangers, heightening risks.
Stay alert to further updates and warnings as conditions evolve. For road closures and safety information, monitor local emergency services or the Illinois Department of Transportation.
