Marion, IL – A sweeping set of transportation upgrades continues across Southern Illinois this summer, as 13 major projects valued at more than $534 million are underway. From interstate expansions to resurfacing and bridge replacements, the improvements span several counties and are part of the state’s “Rebuild Illinois” initiative.

According to the Illinois Department of Transportation, five of these projects are scheduled for completion by the end of 2025, with the remaining eight targeted for finish dates between 2026 and 2028. Key efforts include ongoing I-57 and I-24 upgrades, along with widespread repairs to key state routes in Johnson, Franklin, Jefferson, and Hamilton counties.

In Johnson County, I-24 resurfacing between Mileposts 0-13 remains active with lane closures expected through 2025. Simultaneously, work on the Ohio River Bridge near Metropolis is underway, with $38 million allocated for repairs and bridge painting through 2027.

Interstate 57 is seeing extensive expansion efforts. Multiple segments between Marion and Mount Vernon are being widened to six lanes and include the replacement of overpass structures. The most expensive portion—between Mileposts 75-85—will cost $105 million and is scheduled through 2028.

Beyond the interstates, Southern Illinois state routes are receiving attention. Illinois 146 in Vienna is being widened with a new roundabout, while a major $94 million reconstruction is occurring along I-64 from Washington County to I-57. Improvements on Illinois 149, 14, and 37 are also underway, including roundabout construction and resurfacing.

A future project, set to begin in 2025, will upgrade Illinois 13 in Williamson County with a $45 million investment to enhance traffic flow near Crab Orchard Lake.

Motorists are advised to expect both daytime and nighttime lane closures throughout the region as crews continue to deliver long-term road safety and infrastructure improvements.
