Herkimer, NY – A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for Southern Herkimer County through 7 a.m. Friday, as bands of lake effect snow develop early Thursday and continue into the night, creating hazardous travel conditions across Central New York.
According to the National Weather Service in Albany, 2 to 6 inches of snow are expected, with locally higher totals possible in the most persistent lake effect bands. Wind gusts up to 40 mph will lead to blowing and drifting snow, further reducing visibility on area roads.
The advisory covers communities including Little Falls, Ilion, Dolgeville, Herkimer, and Frankfort, where forecasters warn that both the Thursday morning and evening commutes could be affected by slippery, snow-covered roads and occasional whiteout conditions.
Motorists are urged to slow down and use extra caution, as weather and visibility may change rapidly within lake effect snow bands.
The snow is expected to taper off by early Friday morning as winds ease and temperatures remain below freezing.
