Pueblo, Colo. – Colorado is bracing for another hot stretch Sunday with widespread dry weather, but isolated thunderstorms could return as early as Monday, especially over the mountains. Highs on the eastern plains are expected to soar into the upper 90s, with some communities hitting 100 degrees.

According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, most of the state will remain sunny and dry through Sunday, with only a slight chance of an isolated storm in higher elevations. By Monday, a weak system will bring back chances for showers and thunderstorms, mainly along the Front Range and into the San Juan and Sangre de Cristo Mountains.

Drivers along I-25 from Colorado Springs to Trinidad should prepare for brief downpours and gusty winds Monday afternoon, while rural counties on the plains may see lightning strikes in dry grassland that could spark fire concerns. Mountain towns such as Alamosa and Gunnison will stay cooler, topping out in the mid-80s, but should watch for afternoon showers through Tuesday.

Heat will remain the dominant story for most of southern Colorado, with little relief on the plains where overnight lows stay in the 60s. Residents are urged to limit outdoor activity during peak afternoon hours, stay hydrated, and avoid leaving children or pets in vehicles.

The National Weather Service says storm chances decrease by midweek, but above-average heat will linger across the state.
