PUEBLO, Colo. – A calm, cool dawn greets southern Colorado today, but changes are brewing along the peaks and plains. The quiet warmth stretching across Pueblo and the Arkansas Valley will fade as a developing system nudges into the Rockies late Thursday, bringing rain to the plains and snow to the high country.
According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, Wednesday will stay sunny and mild, topping out near 71 degrees with light northwest winds turning southeasterly. Clouds begin building this evening ahead of Thursday’s system, which could deliver scattered showers after 3 p.m. along the I-25 corridor.
By Thursday night, isolated thunderstorms and light showers will develop across Pueblo County and stretch into the Wet and Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Rainfall totals will be modest — under a tenth of an inch in most spots — but any heavier bursts could briefly reduce visibility for drivers.
In the mountains above 10,000 feet, forecasters expect the season’s first meaningful snow. Accumulations of 1 to 3 inches are likely, with up to 5 inches possible along the highest peaks of Chaffee and Lake Counties. Gusty winds could make for slick passes and difficult driving on Highway 50 and Monarch Pass late Thursday into Friday.
Conditions dry out quickly for the weekend, with sunshine returning and highs in the low 70s. Still, early hints of winter are clear — from wind-driven flakes in the high country to that cool edge creeping into evening air across Pueblo’s neighborhoods.
After all, Colorado’s balance between warm plains and snowy peaks defines late October — calm for now, but always ready to shift fast.
