Walsenburg, CO – Southern Colorado residents are facing a one-two weather punch as damaging winds continue Monday morning and freezing temperatures move in early Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Pueblo.
A High Wind Warning remains in effect until 9 a.m. Monday for the Walsenburg area and Upper Huerfano River Basin, where west winds between 25 and 35 mph and gusts up to 60 mph are expected. The NWS warns that winds could knock down trees and power lines, potentially causing widespread outages and making travel difficult for high-profile vehicles.
Following the wind event, a Freeze Warning will take effect from 3 a.m. to 8 a.m. Tuesday across Las Animas, Baca, and Huerfano Counties, including Walsenburg, Trinidad, Kim, Springfield, Branson, and Walsh. Forecasters predict temperatures as low as 22°F, threatening crops, sensitive vegetation, and outdoor plumbing.
Officials urge residents to secure outdoor items, stay away from windows during strong winds, and protect plants, pets, and pipes ahead of Tuesday morning’s freeze.
“Frost and freeze conditions could kill crops and damage unprotected outdoor plumbing,” the NWS said in its advisory.
The cold snap marks the first widespread freeze of the fall season for southern Colorado, signaling the arrival of winter-like conditions across the region.
