Walsenburg, CO – Residents across southern Colorado are bracing for damaging winds and an early-season freeze as the National Weather Service (NWS) in Pueblo issues dual alerts for the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and nearby valleys.

According to the NWS, a High Wind Warning remains in effect until 9 a.m. Monday, with west winds of 30 to 40 mph and gusts reaching 75 mph expected in the Southern Sangre de Cristo Mountains, including Stonewall, Weston, Cuchara, and Spanish Peaks. Officials warn of downed trees and power lines, along with widespread power outages and hazardous travel conditions, especially for high-profile vehicles.

In addition, a Freeze Warning will take effect from 3 a.m. to 8 a.m. Tuesday for the Walsenburg area and Upper Huerfano River Basin below 7,500 feet. Temperatures could drop as low as 22°F, potentially killing crops and damaging outdoor plumbing or unprotected vegetation.

Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, stay indoors during the strongest winds, and take precautions to protect plants and pipes ahead of the freeze.

The National Weather Service advises: “Remain in the lower levels of your home during the windstorm, and avoid windows. Watch for falling debris and tree limbs. Use caution if you must drive.”

This marks one of the region’s strongest early-season wind events of fall 2025, with conditions expected to calm by late Monday before temperatures plummet overnight.
