Pueblo, Colo. – Fires could ignite and spread rapidly across southern Colorado by Wednesday afternoon as extreme heat, powerful winds, and critically low humidity combine to create dangerous conditions.
According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, critical fire weather conditions are expected Wednesday, with an even greater threat Thursday afternoon into the evening under a Fire Weather Watch. Wind gusts could reach up to 45 mph, while relative humidity drops as low as 6 percent, creating an environment where any spark can quickly grow out of control.
Communities along the Interstate 25 corridor, including Pueblo, Colorado Springs, Trinidad, and Walsenburg, face the highest risk. Dry grasses and warm temperatures will further increase the potential for fast-moving fires, especially in open areas and foothills.
Outdoor burning should be avoided, and equipment that could generate sparks should be used with extreme caution. Residents are urged to secure loose items and be prepared to act quickly if a fire develops nearby.
Conditions will remain dangerous through Thursday evening, with additional warnings possible as winds and dry air persist across the region.
