Pueblo, Colorado – Gusty winds and isolated thunderstorms will sweep into southern Colorado this weekend, threatening fire conditions across the San Luis Valley and wet travel by Monday on key routes like I-25.
According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, Saturday afternoon brings elevated fire danger for the San Luis Valley due to dry air and winds up to 25 mph. On Sunday, gusts could top 35 mph across the eastern plains. Residents in Alamosa, La Junta, and Lamar should avoid outdoor burning and secure loose materials ahead of the weekend.
In higher terrain, such as the Chaffee County mountains above 10,000 feet, isolated snow showers are expected Saturday evening with minor accumulation. Though not widespread, the activity could impact hikers and travelers in the Mosquito and Sawatch Ranges.
Thunderstorm chances increase Sunday night into Monday, especially over the Palmer Divide and the central mountains. By Monday night, a low-pressure system spreads rain across much of southeastern Colorado, with the highest chances near Pueblo, Colorado Springs, and Canon City. Roads could be slick through early Tuesday.
The system exits by Wednesday morning, followed by sunny, warmer weather midweek.
